from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HEYMAT (Hybrid European-Muslim Identity Models) is a social science research project started in 2008 at the Humboldt University in Berlin and the Otto Suhr Institute for Political Science , which investigates the identity concepts of Muslim immigrants in Germany. The project is funded by the VW Foundation through the Schumpeter Fellowship . The director is Naika Foroutan and Isabel Schaefer.

content

The research project asks why Muslim immigrants identify with Germany is difficult. The subject of the investigation are Muslim identity patterns that combine being German and being Muslim. Research interest is to what extent hybrid identities play a mediating role for integration processes. The thesis is that hybrid identities are necessary to bridge the gap of incomprehension between the indigenous population and the immigrants. At the same time, the relationship between Europe and the Islamic world and its repercussions on identity formation are analyzed. It is investigated what contribution the bearers of bicultural identities make to accelerate the change of national identities. At the end of the project, a nationwide representative online survey is planned, in which not only Muslims are to be asked about their hybrid identity, but also other comparison groups.

The research results should be made available to a broad public after the end of the project.
