Mallow tea is an infusion drink made from the flowers of the wild mallow or the hibiscus flower ( hibiscus tea ), because both plants belong to the mallow family .

The dried calyxes of the annual African mallow Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (Roselle) are used to prepare the red hibiscus tea . The infusion has a sour taste. The ingredients of hibiscus tea are malic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid, pectins, mucous polysaccharides, polyphenolic acids, flavonoids, anthocyanins and vitamin C. Malventee is common on all continents. In northeast Africa ( Egypt and Sudan ), the tea is as Karkadeh drunk, other names are Sudantee or African mallow . Another area of ​​distribution is West Africa, where the tea is known as Bissap and in Gambia as Wonjo . In Mexico the tea is known as Agua de Jamaica and in Guatemala as Rosa de Jamaica . The tea is also known in Indonesia and Malaysia.

The mallow tea from the wild mallow ( Malva sylvestris ) is made from the flowers and leaves. It has a soothing effect against coughs and sore throats.

Many fruit teas contain mallow tea as the main ingredient, the eponymous fruit is then added in smaller quantities.
