The Hinako Islands ( Kepulauan Hinako in Indonesian ) are an Indonesian group of islands.

geography

The Hinako Islands are part of the district (Kecematen) Sirombu the governmental district Westnias ( Indonesian Kabupaten Nias Barat ) in the province of North Sumatra ( Indonesian Sumatra Utara ). The archipelago is located off the west coast of the island of Nias , west of Sumatra in the Indian Ocean .

The main island is Hinako in the center of the archipelago. About one kilometer to the southwest is Imana , about two kilometers northeast of Hutu Langu , two kilometers southeast of Bugi and two kilometers south of Bawa , the largest island in the group. The island of Heruanga is located about five kilometers west of Hinako . Half a kilometer south of Bugi is the small island of Hamutala and eight kilometers from Hinako, in the far northwest of the archipelago, is the island of Asu .

The islands are shallow coral reefs overgrown with vegetation and surrounded by wide reefs.

The villages of Hinako and Balowondrato are located on Hinako . Imana , Bawasawa and Halomana are the settlements on Imana and on Bawa there are the villages of Bawusaloo and Balojasa . The village of Maruhawa is on Asu.

53 different bird species are known on the Hinako Islands, including endangered species such as the white-bellied frigate bird ( Fregata andrewsi ), the great knot ( Calidris tenuirostris ) and the rare wedge-tailed shearwater ( Ardenna pacifica ). As potentially endangered apply here to be found Swinhoewellenläufer ( Oceanodroma monorhis ), Oriental Darter ( Anhinga melanogaster ), Malays plover ( Charadrius peronii ), bar-tailed godwit ( Limosa lapponica ), Sialia beach runner ( Calidris ruficollis ), Gray-tailed Sandpiper ( Tringa brevipes ) Tukkispecht ( meiglyptes tukki ), long-tailed parakeet ( Psittacula longicauda ) and Feuermennigvogel ( Pericrocotus igneus ).

During the earthquake off Sumatra in 2005 , the islands were lifted three meters into the air. The islands were previously hit by the great tsunami on December 26, 2004 .

tourism

Bawa and Asu are the destination of surf tourists. Visitors can also fish and snorkel, the latter on the quieter east coast of Asus and at Hutu Langu. The islands can only be reached by boat from Nias, which has an airport. There is a ferry service from Sirombu to Nias six times a week .
