Location of the Hindenburg barracks in Hesse

The Hindenburg-Kaserne (HBK) in Kassel was before the Second World War for the German Wehrmacht built and was then again from 1971 to 1994 Location of air defense battalion / Air Defense Regiment of the Armed Forces .

history

Like the Liège and Wittich barracks, the Hindenburg barracks was built after 1935 as part of a large barracks construction program by the Wehrmacht . It was named after the former Field Marshal General and President Paul von Hindenburg . Parts of the 15th Infantry Regiment were quartered there until 1939, and after the war began, various units of the field replacement system.

The barracks suffered considerable damage during bombing during World War II .

After the war, the local and regional courts moved into the partially renovated barracks buildings, followed by an industrial company and another company. Between these civil facilities there were still usable halls that were used again by the military as early as 1959. Towards the end of the 1960s, the HBK was rescheduled for its original purpose. District and regional courts moved out. The Bundeswehr Training Battalion 59 occupied the barracks. It was completely renovated and expanded. The training battalion was disbanded. In the summer of 1971 the anti-aircraft battalion 2 was relocated from the Fritzlar airfield to the HBK in Kassel. With the reclassification and conversion of the anti-aircraft battalion to the Air Defense Regiment 2, extensive new buildings and conversions were necessary. Over the years the barracks have been renovated block by block.

On September 24, 1993, the second air defense regiment was decommissioned, and at the end of March 1994 it was disbanded and liquidated. The barracks were demolished. Today there is the “Marbachshöhe”, a residential and service center.
