Hine e Hine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hine E Hine is a New Zealand lullaby sung in Māori .

The song was written by the Māori princess Te Rangi Pai (born Fanny Rose Porter 1868-1916) in 1907.

An instrumental version of New Zealand TV's second program was broadcast before the daily break from 1979 to 1994, accompanied by a drawing depicting Goodnight Kiwi .

The song was covered by Hayley Westenra on her album Pure and by José Carreras on his 2003 album The José Carreras Collection . Frances Alda recorded the song on March 28, 1927. It was released more frequently on CD than New Zealand's "unofficial national anthem" Pokarekare Ana , with over 40 versions .

The song has the shape of a lullaby, but ultimately the author comforts herself when her health, career and family collapse.
