The historical weaving mill in Braunsdorf , a district of Niederwiesa , now houses a museum on the textile industry and is a listed building.

history

The building complex was built around 1800. From 1827 a spinning mill produced yarn there . The power was driven by a water wheel with impact water from the Zschopau . In the following decades there were changes of ownership and changes in production. The building housed a sheep's wool laundry, later a dye works and a felt factory.

In 1910 Martin Tannenhauer relocated his weaving business from Chemnitz to Braunsdorf. Up until 1990, furniture upholstery fabrics, decorative fabrics and plushes were mainly produced. The company became known for developing patterns for period furniture fabrics in Biedermeier design.

In 1990, the state-owned weaving company was liquidated by VE Möbelkombinat Dresden-Hellerau . With the support of the Friends of the Chemnitz Industrial Museum and Werner Tannenhauer, grandson of the company founder and last manager, some of the weaving machines and facilities were preserved.

Since 1994, the former industrial site has presented itself as a technical monument and museum. Numerous functional machines are used to present the work processes: from the sample design to the finished fabric. In addition, the development of the textile industry is explained, from the weaving of the ancestors to the weaving technology of the 20th century. The production process can be demonstrated on the looms in the production halls, some of which are still originally furnished.
