History of the Great War

History of the Great War , dt. History of the Great War, is the title of a 28-volume historical work on the military operations of the British Army in the First World War .

The full title is History of the Great War Based on Official Documents , but most of the time it is simply referred to as British Official History for short .

The work was prepared by the historical department of the Committee of Imperial Defense (CID: Committee for Imperial Defense) under the direction of the historian Brigadier-General Sir James Edward Edmonds . The first edition appeared in 1932 and the last volume in 1949. No particular order was followed in the edition, so that the first volume, Military Operations: France and Belgium, appeared in 1914 eight years after the second.

The History of the Great War was written as a historical textbook for military personnel, not for the general public. The British historian John Keegan , a critic of dry, brittle prose, said: "the compilers ... have achieved the remarkable feat of writing an exhaustive account of one of the world's greatest tragedies without the display of any emotion at all. " The authors have succeeded in presenting the remarkable masterpiece of an exhaustive reckoning with one of the greatest tragedies in the world, without the slightest sign of inner involvement. ")
