Cyril Falls

Cyril Bentham Falls , CBE (born March 2, 1888 in Dublin , † April 23, 1971 in Walton-on-Thames ) was a British military historian, writer and journalist.

biography

Falls was a captain and staff officer in the 36th (Ulster) Division , Royal Iniskilling Fusiliers , during World War I. He received the Croix de guerre and was CBE . From 1923 to 1939 he was involved in the creation of the official British military history of the First World War and from 1939 he was the military correspondent for The Times (as previously Liddell Hart ). From 1946 to 1953 he was Chichele Professor of the History of War at Oxford University (All Souls College), a post that Liddell Hart had also hoped for.

Known as an expert on World War I, he also wrote books for a wider audience, including Irish history in addition to World War I, a brief history of World War II, a biography of Marshal Ferdinand Foch, and books on changes in warfare from the 19th to the 19th century into the 20th century, in which he lamented the barbarization of war in the 20th century.

He also wrote literary reviews and a novel, as well as a book on Rudyard Kipling .
