Norman H. Gibbs

Norman Henry Gibbs (born April 17, 1910 in London , † April 20, 1990 ) was a British military historian .

Life

Gibbs was educated at Magdalen College of the University of Oxford . From 1934 to 1936 he was an assistant lecturer at University College London . He was then a Fellow and Tutor in Modern History at Merton College, University of Oxford. From 1939 to 1945 he served in World War II a . a. at 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards and in the Historical Section of the War Cabinet Office . From 1953 to 1977 he was Chichele Professor of the History of War at All Souls College, University of Oxford. He then became an Emeritus Fellow. His academic students included a. John Hattendorf , Robert S. Jordan , Malcolm H. Murfett , Robert J. O'Neill , George Peden , Nicholas Rodger , Charles Townshend, and Jehuda Wallach .

He was also Chairman of the Naval Education Advisory Committee and a member of the International Council of the Institute for Strategic Studies , the Council of the Royal United Services Institute , Research Associate of the Center for International Studies of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University . In 1975/76 he was Visiting Professor at the University of New Brunswick , 1978/79 at the United States Military Academy in West Point and from 1982 to 1984 at the National University of Singapore .
