Heat runner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hitzläufer ( Low German Hitzlöper ) is an outdated name for amber seekers on Eiderstedt and the North Frisian Islands . The term arose because on a sandbank called Hitzsand ( "white sand" North Frisian hitz for "white") near St. Peter-Ording a lot of amber washed up and the name of the sandbank transferred to collectors as a local professional title .

Heat runner , derived from "Hetzläufer", is also an old name for a profession. The runner was, as the name suggests, a messenger , a courier, one who ran from place to place in a hurry.
