history
The place was founded in 1876 by the British missionary John Widdicombe. Originally he was called Thlotse after the river south of the city. The often used second name of the city, Leribe , comes from the French Leribe Mission eight kilometers away , which was founded in 1859 by François Coillard . In 1879, the British Major Bell had a fortification tower built, which still stands on the town's market square and is one of the three oldest preserved buildings in Lesotho. In the Gun War (rifle war) 1880–81 and in subsequent disputes, Hlotse was besieged several times.
Hlotse has been the Roman Catholic bishopric of the Leribe diocese since 1952 .
