The Katse Dam on Malibamatšo , a tributary of there Senqu named Oranje in Lesotho was with 185 meters to the construction of the Tekeze Dam in Ethiopia in 2009, the highest dam in Africa. It was built to export water to South Africa and to produce electrical energy. The dam is a double-curved arch dam made of concrete. The reservoir is 45 kilometers long.

The first water was delivered on January 22, 1998. Currently, 30 m³ / s of water flows freely through a tunnel to South Africa for five million dollars a year. There is also a variable remuneration. The project is part of the " Lesotho Highlands Water Project ".

A hydropower plant with a nominal output of 72 MW (capacity up to 80 MW) is also connected at 'Muela in the Leribe district .

In order to fill the reservoir, residents of several villages had to be relocated. The weight of the water created dam- induced earthquakes that made some houses in the area uninhabitable.

The German companies Lahmeyer International , Hochtief and Philipp Holzmann were involved in the construction, as well as Coyne & Bellier . Lahmeyer was charged and convicted of corruption in connection with the construction of the dam in Lesotho .
