The University Library Kaiserslautern (formerly the University Library Kaiserslautern ) is a central facility of the University of Kaiserslautern . It is distributed over three locations in Kaiserslautern, Zweibrücken and Pirmasens.

History and organizational structure

The history of the University Library in Kaiserslautern is related to the historical development of the University of Kaiserslautern (formerly Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences). In 1971 and 1989, when the universities in Kaiserslautern and Pirmasens were founded, libraries with a different focus on literature were created at both locations, with the Kaiserslautern location initially being divided into two further location libraries.

When Zweibrücken was founded in 1994, a new modern library opened on the former site of the Kreuzberg barracks in Zweibrücken, which at the time was one of the first libraries in Rhineland-Palatinate to enable online literature research via an OPAC . In 1999 the company moved to a renovated building with spacious reading and work areas.

A significant change took place in 2016 when the formerly separate university locations were merged at the Kaiserslautern study location. The location libraries, which are also spatially separated, were moved together to a new building in the former wool storage facility of the listed worsted spinning mill and modernized in the course of this.

Due to the staggered creation and due to the organizational structure, the media inventory of the campus libraries was set up according to different systematics over many years and the bibliographic data was stored in separate information systems. A large project therefore aimed to integrate the libraries of all locations structurally, organizationally and technically. A first important step in this direction in 2010 was the merging of the databases and the establishment of a joint website. In the years that followed, business processes were also standardized and decision-making processes were shortened. The campus libraries have been under joint management since October 2014 and the standardization project has largely been completed.

Inventory and equipment

The University Library in Kaiserslautern provides students, employees and external users with predominantly scientific literature from the fields of natural and engineering sciences, building and design as well as business administration and IT. In addition, it also has an extensive range of media on many other topics. The media has been open to the public at all locations since it was founded.

The opening stock of the Zweibrücken campus library amounted to approx. 1500 media in 1994 and was financed by a so-called basic book measure of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate until 2004. The joint inventory of all campus libraries now comprises 95,996 print media (as of January 2017).

The users are u. a. Books, newspapers, magazines, loose-leaf books, CDs and DVDs are available. In addition, around 1500 historical works from the previous institutions of today's university have been preserved.

In 2008 the collection was expanded to include e-books . The Zweibrücken campus library has been participating in interlibrary loaning since 2006, the Kaiserslautern and Pirmasens campus libraries since 2011.

Commitment as a teaching library

Since 2003, the University Library Kaiserslautern has been increasingly involved in teaching at the University of Kaiserslautern as a teaching library. In addition to introductory events for freshmen, which primarily deal with library use, the range of courses also includes 90-minute courses with a modular structure and aimed at students in the undergraduate and graduate levels. In these special courses, the professional search for information in online databases, e-book and magazine portals as well as scientific search engines and virtual specialist libraries is taught. Building on these research techniques, the participants also acquire theoretical knowledge about the basic principles of scientific work. In connection with e-learning concepts, the university library works closely with the department for new teaching and learning methods.

Children's university in the university library

In 2009, the Zweibrücken campus library offered an event for the first time as part of the Children's University of the Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences and is one of the libraries that actively participate in this program. Since 2013, child-friendly contributions with changing focuses have been held in all campus libraries on a regular basis.

Cooperations

The university library in Zweibrücken has been committed to promoting reading culture together with the Bibliotheca Bipontina and the Zweibrücken city library since 2006 , although cooperation between the university library, the state library and the city library is rare in Germany. The cooperation is shown above all through joint events, which u. a. take place during the library days.
