In the Middle Ages , a farm settlement consisted of an agricultural yard , a stable building, a house, a chicken coop and possibly a smithy or workshop.

Court settlements are still known in Europe today in Norway , Switzerland and Poland .

There are still farm settlements in Switzerland today. Today, however, these usually consist of one or more farms. They are also called hamlets.
