High bridge (hall)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The high bridge in Halle (Saale) spanned the main arm of the Saale . It was built in 1172 and renovated in 1503. From 1840 it was removed to make way for the Elisabeth Bridge, inaugurated in 1843. The bridge was around 300 meters long. It was an arch bridge with several pillars. The old trade route led over the bridge via Eisleben towards the west. Today's Elisabeth Bridge is roughly at the previous location of the High Bridge.

On the river side of the pillar between the second and third arches there was a relief stone called the “ Saalaffe ”. According to one version of the legend, this legendary figure wanted to prevent the construction of the bridge, eventually petrified and was walled in.
