history

In 1556 a merchant asked Israel for permission to build a synagogue. This was completed by 1563.

The high synagogue was built on two floors. The prayer room was on the upper floor, and there were probably stalls on the ground floor. This construction method is unique in Poland. She was probably from Italy.

The building was rebuilt several times after fires. In 1939 the synagogue was closed.

Extensive restoration work took place from 1969 to 1972. In 1997 the building was returned to the Krakow Jewish Community. It has been used for exhibitions and concerts since 2005. The former synagogue can be visited.
