The Dutch planted aquarium is a certain type of freshwater aquarium in which plants play a greater role than the species of fish kept in the aquarium. Occasionally, fish are not used at all. Starting in the Netherlands , the Dutch plant aquariums became popular around the world in the 1960s. Up to this point in time, the aquarium hobby initially concentrated on keeping fish in the aquarium , with plants playing a rather subordinate role.

The typical Dutch plant aquarium of the 1960s and 1970s was clad with wood on the sides, which means that the aquarium fits harmoniously into the apartment. In the Dutch planted aquarium, the plants are planted in a similar way to a garden bed. Basically only a few species are used, but these are used in large groups. The number of species is often limited to one species per 10 centimeters of aquarium length. Commonly used plants include Bach castle , cognac , moss balls , Java fern and thousand-leaf species . Plants with a similar growth habit and color should not stand next to each other. Another characteristic of the Dutch plant aquarium is the so-called plant route , in which slow-growing plants are planted in the aquarium at a semi-diagonal according to their size. This way of planting creates the impression of greater depth. With decorative materials suitable for aquariums such as bog roots , visual highlights are created. Because of the dense vegetation, a Dutch planted aquarium is generally dependent on carbon dioxide fertilization .

The design of plant aquariums in the "Dutch style" is often based on the principle of the golden section ( sectio aurea ). Particularly decorative individual plants, so-called "solitaires", are planted in appropriate effective locations according to the rules of the sectio aurea . The panes are hidden as much as possible by decoration or planting - apart from a point on the back wall, which creates a view into an imaginary depth.

In contrast to the so-called natural aquarium , a large number of different types of plants are maintained in a Dutch plant aquarium and emphasis is placed on the appearance of plants that are next to each other. Combinations of the different types of aquariums can also be found.
