In aquaristics, a planting technique for aquarium plants is called a plant route . Plant roads are particularly typical for Dutch plant aquariums.

To create a planting line, cuttings of an aquarium plant are sorted according to size and, if necessary, imagined according to length. The smallest plant is planted in the foreground. The further cuttings are then planted in two to three parallel rows at an angle to the rear in a tiered arrangement. The optical effect creates the impression of greater depth in the aquarium. The aquarium background is usually covered by tall plants.
