description

The false water friend is an evergreen marsh plant that has opposite leaves about seven to 15 centimeters long and can grow to a maximum of 1.5 meters. A special feature is that below the surface of the water the leaves have entire margins and above it are finely toothed. Temperatures of ten to 35 degrees Celsius and a lot to little light are the requirements of the plant, which is why it is a potential invasive neophyte, especially in warmer countries . The plant initially grows in the water with a single stem with roots on all deeper leaves and can later branch out. It blooms in the wild from October to May and forms seeds from November to June. The individual heads , about 1.5 centimeters tall, only have white tubular flowers .

Occurrence

The false water friend originally comes from tropical and subtropical swamps and rivers from Mexico to Argentina. However, due to its modesty, it thrives as an invasive neophyte in Australia, among other places. Here in Europe, too, it can be cultivated in the garden pond, even if only in summer.

Aquaristics

This robust plant is useful for fresh and brackish water aquariums from 10 to 30 ° C, because it grows quickly and absorbs so many harmful substances from the water. It is particularly recommended for newly installed and open pools. It is simply propagated with stems approx. 10 to 20 cm long from the divided mother plant, which are inserted into the substrate.
