history

Soldier Thomas Traill bought the lands on Papa Westray in 1637. In the mid-17th century he built the oldest parts of Holland House. Traill made his fortune in the kelp industry (see also brown algae # use ). The property was inherited over generations within the family and, with the exception of one phase between 1886 and 1928, remained in their possession until 1952. Holland Farm is one of the older parts of the property and dates from the 17th century. A homestead called Manavel already existed at that time, which Traill was expanding. The current stable, which is said to have housed Manavel's kitchen, is considered the oldest building. Around 1823 one of the first horse mills was built on the Orkney to drive the threshing machine. With the collapse of the kelp industry in the 1830s, Traill focused on Holland Farm and expanded it continuously. The newest buildings were added towards the end of the 19th century. These include the elongated stables, which replace the previous buildings on a map from 1882.

Roof beams of the Rossmühle

Holland Farm is at the crossroads of Papa Westray's streets and is directly adjacent to Holland House to the west. The two-story main building is on the street and was once plastered with Harl and worked with stepped gables . The house, which was renovated in the 1970s, has a slate-covered gable roof . There is a well to the south. Holland Farm was used for both agriculture and livestock. There are separate stables for horses and dairy cows as well as facilities for milk processing. These facilities are supplemented by a threshing hall with an adjoining round horse mill. In addition to various grain and hay stores, there is also a kiln . The facility also includes a forge and a joinery. The Holland House windmill miller's home is now only in ruins. The former Harl plaster is still partially preserved on various buildings. Some also have the original slate roofing.
