history

The soldier Thomas Traill bought the lands on Papa Westray in 1637. In the middle of the 17th century he built the oldest parts of Holland House, which today make up the northwest part. Traill made his fortune in the kelp industry (see also brown algae # use ). The property was inherited over generations within the family and, with the exception of one phase between 1886 and 1928, remained in their possession until 1952. Numerous outbuildings have been added and Holland House has expanded over the years. Most of what is now Holland House was built between 1810 and 1814.

description

Holland House is located in the center of Papa Westray at the intersection of the two streets near Papa Westray Airport . While the original building had an L-shaped floor plan, the construction work at the beginning of the 19th century resulted in a block of buildings that almost completely encloses a small inner courtyard. Holland House is mostly two-story. The exceptions include a short one-story wing on the south side and an extension with a pent roof that connects two wings on the north side. With the exception of the older southwest wing, the building openings are set off with ashlar stones. Cornices crown several windows along the east and west sides. The facades are plastered with Harl . The gable of the gable roofs are made as a stepped gable . The roofs of the main buildings are covered with slate shingles; smaller extensions, including asbestos panels.
