history

Former primary school in September 2007

After Port Glasgow expanded eastwards as a result of construction activities after the end of World War II , the Diocese of Paisley established a new parish there. Initially, a discarded shed served the Navy as an emergency church. The associated school was temporarily housed in Nissenhütten . In 1946, the renowned architecture firm Gillespie, Kidd & Coia was commissioned to plan a new church , which was responsible for numerous Roman Catholic sacred buildings in the Archdiocese of Glasgow and the Diocese of Paisley. When the congregation had grown to over 5,000 in the 1950s, the establishment of the church became urgent. It was finally completed and consecrated in 1959. The associated elementary school has meanwhile been demolished.

description

The Holy Family Roman Catholic Church is located on a steep slope between Parkhill Avenue and Northfield Avenue in the eastern part of Port Glasgow. The masonry of the elongated building consists largely of yellowish brick . Plain concrete pillars divide the facade into nine segments on the eaves side. A continuous band of square window elements, separated only by the pillars in groups of three, runs below the roof. This is a copper-covered gable roof with a low angle of inclination. A fully glazed, one-story porch with a flat roof and two wooden, double-leaf doors emerges on the south side. An unadorned bell tower with a rectangular floor plan is in front of the church in the northwest. Only the top section is open. It is bordered by a glass stair tower, which is connected to the church via a two-story glass corridor. An iron cross adorns the apex of the west-facing gable, although the facade is otherwise unadorned and windowless.
