The Holzhof is the most traditional sports facility in the small Brandenburg town of Elsterwerda in the Elbe-Elster district . It is located at the end of the village in the direction of Großenhain.

history

Originally, this area was a transshipment point on the Elsterwerda-Grödel-Floßkanal , which was put into operation in 1748. The timber and other goods arriving on the water or in carts were handled and stored here. There were no permanent buildings on the site at that time and it can be assumed that there were only shelters for carters, bombers , horses and fodder. After the canal was hardly used anymore due to the suspension of timber transports in 1833 and the construction of the Elsterwerda-Riesa railway line in 1875, the timber yard also lost its importance.

As early as 1864, a building used by the Royal Forestry Administration was leased out as a restaurant and the area became a popular destination. After the Krauschützer Park opposite was created in 1882 , with which the Holzhof was connected by the Gründlerbrücke over the Pulsnitz , inaugurated in 1883 , the city bought the site with the building for 27,000 Reichsmarks and leased it. The clubs used the grounds of the Holzhof for their festivities and at the beginning of the 1920s, the city's first public outdoor pool was opened on the Pulsnitz. In 1934, the inauguration of the newly built outdoor pool on the Holzhof took place, the water of which was initially discharged from the Pulsnitz. Subsequently, the construction of sports facilities began, the plans of which were drawn up by the master builder Balsam. In 1937 the facility was completed with sports and tennis courts, a parade ground and festival meadow, as well as a shooting range. Before that, there had been sports facilities in Ludwig-Jahn-Straße since the turn of the century, and in the 1920s in the palace gardens.

Due to the Second World War , the wooden courtyard restaurant was a victim of arson in April 1945. After the war, the damage to the facility was gradually removed and the swimming pool was concreted in 1962. The extraction of the water from the Pulsnitz was forbidden in 1970 by the hygiene inspection and one had to use the iron-rich groundwater . In 1977, after renovations and extensions, a restaurant that met the requirements was reopened, which was sold in 1989. The hotel and park restaurant Holzhof was created through further renovations and extensions. In 1997 the deficiencies in the swimming pool were so severe that it had to be stopped.

The tennis center at the Holzhof

In December 2003 a tennis hall was inaugurated on the site and seven tennis courts followed a little later.
