Wood chip transporters (English "Woodchip Carrier") are ships that are mainly used to transport wood chips.

history

During the 1960s, the industrial use of wood chips grew strongly, particularly due to the sharp increase in paper production, so that the construction of pure wood chip transporters began, with existing bulk carriers initially being converted for wood chip transport. From around 1970, however, new builds of wood chip transporters were built, mostly in Japanese shipyards. From the outside, wood chip transporters are recognizable by their high freeboard and their loading equipment on deck and their side ports for unloading the cargo. Almost all wood chip transporters are designed as self-unloaders . Due to their clearance, which is adapted to the stowage coefficient of the wood chips, grain is almost the only cargo that is also transported with these special ships.
