Homothallism
Homothallism in fungi describes the ability to change pairing types . In contrast, there is heterothallia .
Using the example of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae : haploid cells can either have the mating type a or α. To mate two haploid cells, partners of different mating types are necessary. However, a homothallic mother cell has the option of changing its mating type ( mating-type switching ) and then mating with its daughter cell that has emerged through budding.
