HongYing-5

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The HongYing-5 (short: HY-5 (export designation HN-5 ), Chinese  红缨 -5  /  红缨 -5 , Pinyin Hóng Yīng-5 , in German: Rote Tasselblume -5 ) is a Chinese , shoulder-supported short - range floor -Air guided missile system . It is used to combat helicopters and fighter planes at low altitudes.

development

The HongYing-5 is China's first generation MANPADS and originally goes back to the Soviet 9K32 Strela-2 ( NATO code name : SA-7A Grail ), which was introduced in 1968. During the Vietnam War , the North Vietnamese Armed Forces received several Strela-2 MANPADS from the Soviet Union. In order to meet the need for further portable air defense systems, the North Vietnamese handed at least one copy to the PRC with a request for reverse engineering and subsequent mass production . In the course of this, CPMIEC produced the versions HN-5A, HN-5B, HN-5C and HQ-5C. The HongYing 5 series is now considered obsolete and is currently being replaced by the more powerful QW series.

functionality

The system consists of the anti-aircraft missile, a launch tube including visor and a handle with integrated electronics. The rocket is ready to fire within five seconds: after switching on the power supply, the shooter follows the target with the optical viewfinder and pulls the trigger on the handle. This activates the seeker head and the electronics attempt to lock onto the air target. The shooter must now continue to pursue the target until the missile ignites and leaves the launch tube. In addition, an IFF receiver can be mounted on the shooter's helmet to prevent self-fire.

During take-off, the booster motor in the launch tube burns down completely, accelerating the anti-aircraft missile and causing it to rotate in order to generate a stable trajectory. After leaving the pipe, the front and rear guide surfaces fold out. After a split second, the rocket motor ignites, accelerating the missile to a maximum of 500 m / s and then holding it at this speed. During the flight phase, the warhead is armed and the target is tracked using the infrared seeker head. The warhead ignites when it hits the target, but cannot destroy the aircraft as a whole, but can cause serious damage to the airframe, etc. The HongYing-5 is only fully operational in clear weather conditions. The first variants of the HN-5 were already able to effectively attack jet aircraft from behind or helicopters from all sides. Although the HongYing-5 is classified as a fire-and-forget weapon, it is easily distracted from the ground by solar radiation and, when used in hilly terrain, by heat radiation, as some test results showed. The missile is limited in range, speed and altitude, but forces enemy pilots to dodge to greater heights, which results in the detection of longer-range and heavier anti-aircraft missile systems.
