Hong Kong Supplementary Character Set
The Hong Kong Supplementary Character Set , abbreviated to HKSCS ( Chinese 香港 增補 字符 集 , Pinyin Xiānggǎng Zēngbǔ Zìfújí - " Hong Kong Supplementary Character Set ") is an extension of the Big5 coding, which contains 4,941 additional characters for Cantonese . It is a further development of the Government Chinese Character Set ( 政府 通用 字庫 - "General Character Set of the Government") of the Hong Kong government and was initially only used in authorities, later also in public.

Due to the large differences between Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese, the Hong Kong government recognized in 1995 the need for a Cantonese character set that would simplify electronic communication in this language, since the Big5 encoding did not contain these characters.
As a result, the Government Chinese Character Set was developed, which consists of various Chinese characters that are used in Hong Kong. But the set wasn't very well organized.
As a result, the HKSCS-1999 standard was developed. As usage increased, the character set was revised in 2001, 2004 and 2008. Since 2004, all characters of the HKSCS standard have also been encoded in Unicode ; previously, the characters were encoded in the user-defined area.

Windows Vista can display the HKSCS by default. A patch is available for Windows 2000 and XP that replaces the code page 950 with a code page 951 which, in addition to the characters encoded in the code page 950, also encodes the HKSCS characters. However, the supplied fonts cause conflicts with other programs and fonts.
Linux has supported HKSCS since 2000 via glibc, but the standard is still the same as in 1999.
Mac OS X 10.0 or later also implements support for HKSCS.
