Hon'inbō Shūsai

Hon'inbō Shūsai ( Japanese 本因坊 秀哉 ; * 1874 in Tokyo ; † January 18, 1940 ) was a Japanese professional Go player and the last holder of the Hon'inbō title.

His real name was Tamura Hoju, he was also known as Tamura Yasuhisa. He was the 21st and last heir to the Hon'inbō house and the successor to Hon'inbō Shuei .

In 1914 he won the Meijin title as the tenth player after the first Honinbō. In 1936 he transferred the Hon'inbō title to the Nihon Ki-in and withdrew from the Go.

In 1938, at the age of 64, he returned and played a game against Kitani Minoru , which he lost with 5 points. This part was later processed literarily by the Nobel Prize winner Yasunari Kawabata in his work meijin (English title: The Master of Go ).
