Hoplology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hoplology is the comparative science of the way different cultures and people fight and make wars . The term is derived from both the ancient Greek hoplos (a mythical, shield-armored mythical creature) and the ancient Greek hoplite , the name of the warrior in classical Greece. The scientific discipline originated in the 19th century and is traced back to the explorer and linguist Sir Richard Burton and few others. It was not until the 1960s that hoplology developed into a fully developed academic subject under her mentor Donn F. Draeger (Donald Frederick Draeger, born April 15, 1922, † October 20, 1982). The researchers are organized in the International Hoplology Society ( IHS ).
