Hormizd V.

Hormizd V. († approx. 632) was a late ancient Persian great king who ruled from 630 to 632.

In the years after the death of Chosraus II. 628, the Sassanid Empire was in chaos: no ruler could hold out for more than a few months, two women - daughters of Chosraus - ascended the throne for a short time and some rulers ruled in parallel in different parts of the empire . Not much is known about most of the kings (and queens) of this period apart from their names, as is the case with Hormizds V.

Hormizd is mentioned in only a few sources. According to these, he was made king by troops in Nisibis while Queen Azarmeducht was still ruling (he should not be confused with Farruch Hormizd , although in numismatic research the coins of Hormizds V are partly assigned to him). According to Sebeos , he was said to have been a grandson of Chosrau and was apparently proclaimed king at a very young age. The crown on his coins - the crown of every Sassanid king was specially made for him - shows similarities with that of his grandfather, although the minting locations are not entirely certain.

As Yazdegerd III. 632 was proclaimed king and he was slowly able to assert himself in the following period, Hormizd was apparently overthrown. According to Sebeos, he was strangled by insurgent soldiers. In the Greek Chronicle of Theophanes he is with Yazdegerd III. confused, who could put an end to the anarchic conditions, but at the same time was also the last Sassanid king.
