Horngården is an 8-storey building on Egertorget Square at Øvre Slottgate 21 in Oslo , Norway . It was built in 1929–1930 by the architects Lars Backer and FS Platou and was known as "Norway's first high-rise ".

Building

The building is characterized by its purely functionalist architecture. Originally, the building was planned with 12 full storeys and a recessed attic. However, the plan sparked a great deal of debate and was not granted a derogation from the law at the time that regulated development. So the building was reduced to just eight floors and the possibility of future expansion was left open. The architect Lars Backer died in 1929 and so FS Plautou completed the building. It has been listed by the Riksantikvar and includes the facade, structure and division of the floors and the western staircase.

Horngård received the Norwegian architecture award Sundts premie in 1930 .
