Horst Wessel Monument (Mainz)

The Horst Wessel memorial in Mainz was a memorial for the SA storm leader Horst Wessel who was killed in 1930 . It was built in 1938/39 according to designs by the Mainz architect Hans Laxner and the sculptor Peter Dienstdorf .

The green space on Kaiserstraße in the city center was chosen as the location . The monument to the city architect Eduard Kreyssig , which stands at this point, was demolished.

A competition was announced for the design of the planned monument, which the Mainz-based architect Hans Laxner and the sculptor Peter Dienstdorf were able to win. The inauguration took place on November 9, 1939.

The memorial was destroyed in an air raid during World War II. In its place today a bust reminds of the city architect Kreyssig.
