Hotel New York from the water

The Hotel New York is a hotel in Rotterdam . The hotel, located directly on the Nieuwe Maas , is in the former main building of Holland America Lijn (HAL) and is a prestige property in the Kop van Zuid urban renewal program . It is listed as a Rijksmonument .

The building dates from 1901 to 1917, when the new building replaced accommodation for American emigrants. The building shows clear elements of Art Deco and Art Nouveau . After HAL moved its headquarters to Seattle, it sold the building in 1984. It stood empty for several years. In 1993 it was opened by Dorine Vos, Hans Loos and Daan van der Have as a luxury hotel right on the banks of the Rhine. While the hotel is now in the middle of the prosperous Kop van Zuid, there were plans for this in 1993, but the building itself was still in no man's land. The great commercial success of the hotel since it opened helped promote the entire Kop van Zuid project.

The hotel has 72 rooms, two of which are in the two towers. In addition to conference rooms, there is also a restaurant with 400 seats in the building. It served as a source of inspiration for the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam, which opened in 2000 .

An additional water taxi service from the hotel to the city center on the other side of the river proved to be so successful that it has meanwhile been extended to large parts of the urban area (accessible via water). The original investors have since sold the hotel in order to concentrate fully on the management of the water taxis.

The singer Anouk Teeuwe named a record after the hotel with which she achieved platinum status in the Netherlands in 2004.
