The Hotel Nikkō-Kanaya ( Japanese 日光 金谷 ホ テ ル Nikkō Kanaya Hoteru ) in Nikkō , 140 km north of Tōkyō in the mountains, is one of the early examples of a hotel in Japan aimed at foreigners.

Overview

Kanaya Zenichirō ( 金谷 善 一郎 ), who ran an accommodation for pilgrims to the holy places of Nikkō, took the missionary and linguist Dr. James Hepburn on. At his suggestion, Kanaya opened a hotel under the name "Kanaya Cottage Inn". The hotel quickly became known among foreigners. The English ambassador Harry Smith Parkes (1828–1885) stayed there in 1876 , the travel writer Isabella Bird in 1878 , the 18th President of the USA in 1879, Ulysses S. Grant , 1882 Samuel Gardiner , 1888 missionary Walter Weston (1860-1940).

In 1893 a new building was opened at the current location in a mixed Japanese-European style. Among the prominent guests included 1904 Basil Hall Chamberlain and Erwin Balz , 1905 Frank Lloyd Wright , Arthur, Duke of Connaught , 1908 Robert Koch and his wife, 1910, the Japanese writer Natsume Soseki , 1921 Albert Einstein , 1926 Paul Claudel , in 1931 Charles Lindbergh with his wife Anne, 1937 Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan .

The hotel was used by the American occupation forces from 1945 until it was again accessible to the general public in 1952. In 1957 Indira Gandhi stayed there, 1965 the Russian writer Michail Scholochow , 1971 Shirley MacLaine , 1972 Jack Nicklaus , 1983 Princess Anne .

In 2005 the main building, the new wing and the annex were registered as a cultural treasure, in 2007 as a Heritage of Industrial Modernization: As early as 1908, the hotel had Siemens set up a generator to generate electricity at a small waterfall near the hotel.
