The Hotel Orania.Berlin on Oranienplatz in Berlin-Kreuzberg is a boutique hotel . The building is a historical monument.

History of the building

In 1912, businessman and city councilor Leopold Jacobi (1847–1917) commissioned the Cremer & Wolffenstein architects with the construction of a new, prestigious office building at Oranienstrasse 40/41. The building had the Oranienpalast café on the ground floor and offices on the upper floors. From 1913 the Café Oranienpalast offered its guests concerts and cabarets under the direction of Oscar Barton. The upper floors were rented from AEG , a publisher and a fashion store. Client Leopold Jacobi died in 1917 and in 1924 the Café Oranienpalast closed its doors. The ground floor was converted into the Brenninkmeyer department store by C & A Brenninkmeyer. The Ahlbecker Hof hotel used the upper floors. In 1933 Cäcilia Jacobi, Leopold's widow, handed over the property to her children Ernst, Frieda and Charlotte. The property was sold to C&A in 1934 and the entire building was converted into a department store. The building was spared damage during the Second World War . The property changed hands several times between 1945 and 1995, while parts of the building were used by a furniture and grocery store, a restaurant and a billiards room.

In 1995 the building was listed as a national monument and Club Trash opened on the first floor.

In 2008 attorney Dietrich von Boetticher acquired the building. After the complete renovation, he made the space available free of charge for art and cultural events, the Berlin Biennale (2010), the Weißensee art college and the Ostkreuz picture agency.

In 2014 Dietmar Mueller-Elmau and the architectural office Hilmer Sattler Architekten were commissioned to restore the facades and the interior with the aim of restoring the Café Oranienpalast. The Orania.Berlin opened in August 2017.
