action

first act

The action takes place in Spain in the 1980s. Mario and Colate, two friends, decide to move to town to start a band (Hoy no me puedo levantar). Not only do they leave their lives behind in the village, Colate also leaves his girlfriend Anuca, who only lets him go after Mario promises to take care of Colate (Quiero vivir en la ciudad). Mario promises Colate to give him a red leather jacket if he succeeds. Once in Madrid they have nothing and no one signs them as a duo. After all, you hire "Die 33" as a waiter in the bar, where Mario meets the flamenco dancer Maria. In another bar they finally get to know Panchi, the drummer of a heavy metal band, and Guillermo, a homosexual guitarist and friend of Maria, who are both part of the new band that will be called "Cielo" in the future (Hoy no me puedo levantar (reprise) / No hay marcha en Nueva York). The four musicians find out about a competition that is taking place in 33 and where they want to present themselves. Guillermo tries to create a suitable look for the band with the help of some gay stylists (Maquillaje). Meanwhile, Mario falls in love with Maria, but she gives him the cold shoulder (Por la cara). That's why he turns to Anselmo, the owner of the 33rd. On the day the band was founded, the four, Maria and Patricia, a friend of Guillermo, spend a crazy night using drugs (Hawaii-Bombay). One morning, Anuca suddenly shows up and finds Colate intoxicated with others sleeping in a room. Since Colate also prefers to stay in Madrid instead of following her back to the village, she decides to leave him (Quédate en Madrid). The disappointment causes Colate to consume more drugs from time to time, which the well-known drug dealer Churchi gets for him. Anselmo tries to teach Mario how to conquer Maria (Una Rosa es Una Rosa), but she rejects him again. Maria tells Patricia how unfaithful men are and suggests that they become lesbians (mujer contra mujer). After Panchi disturbs the scene, she fears that Mario wants to hurt her (Lía). Colate, on the other hand, spends the money saved on the instruments on drugs and tells the others that it was stolen from him. Anselmo puts the money out, wants to manage the band in the future and changes the name of the band from "Cielo" to "Rulé" (Me colé en una fiesta). Then the coup d'état of February 23rd happens and the four are obliged to do their military service, but before that the competition takes place, which promptly the band Rulé wins and becomes famous (No controles). On the day of the competition, Maria realizes that Mario is really in love with her and they begin a romance (Medley 1).

Second act

A few years have passed and Rules album has become a great success. Colate and Panchi sit on the roof of 33 with a joint and fantasize about Dalí and Laika ("Eungenio" Salvador Dalí / Laika). Anselmo, Mario and Guillermo find her on the roof and tell them that they will be producing the theme song for a TV show (Aire). Colate returns to his apartment. There he takes a drug overdose (Perdido en mi habitación). A few months later they all see each other in 33 and celebrate the single "Aire", which has become the number one hit. Maria doesn't stay long because she has to work early the next morning, but forgets her wallet. When she returns, she finds Mario with another girl, freaks out and leaves. Mario writes her a song, but Maria feels attacked by this and their relationship tears (Cruz de Navajas). Mario looks for Colate, but does not find him in his apartment, instead he comes back with a sachet of heroin as Mario is about to leave. Both are in a fight over the drug use of Colate (Barco a Venus). Shortly afterwards, Mario got the chance to hire himself out as a soloist and left the band (El uno, el dos y el tres). It's been four years. Maria appears in 33 and only finds Anselmo there (El 7 de septiembre). Later Mario shows up and they spend the night together (Hijo de la Luna). Everyone except Mario would like to celebrate the New Year 1987 together (Un año mas). Colate is very pale and weak and leaves the party early. He looks for Mario in his new apartment, but he doesn't want to talk to him and throws him out. Colate has AIDS and wanted to say goodbye. However, he reaches Ana by phone; Colate then hangs himself in his apartment (El fallo positivo). Panchi finds Colate's body and screams. Mario also learns of Colate's death and feels lonely and guilty (Me cuesta tanto olvidarte). He goes to the cemetery where he meets his old friends. After they have all left, he meets Colate's ghost (No es serio este cementerio), who tells him to go back to Madrid, take Anselmo into the band instead of him and try again with Maria. Mario does that and meets Maria in 33 (La fuerza del destino / Vivimos siempre juntos / Medley 2).
