Huanhu yak

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Huanhu-Yak is a breed of Hausyaks . Since the targeted breeding of the yak is not yet very advanced, yak breeds generally have less breed-typical characteristics than was the case, for example, with European land cattle breeds in the middle of the 19th century. Therefore, phenotypic differences in the house yak are mainly due to the geographical separation of widely spaced locations.

The Huanhu yak is mainly kept in the areas bordering Qinghai Lake in Qinghai . The pasture area is mostly semi-arid and borders the Gobi desert. The population is around one million animals. It is also assumed that domestic cattle were crossed into this breed and that this is why some of the differences to the Qinghai yak result. Compared to this, the Huanhu yak is smaller in size and has a finer build. The head is narrower and has a longer snout. The neck is thinner, the chest wider. The legs are longer and narrower. Most of the Huanhu yaks are polled. The coat color varies a lot. About 64.3 percent are black-brown, 10 percent have gray fur and another 10 percent are spotted white. Five percent are maroon and three percent are white.
