Ivan Petrella (born November 8, 1969 ), also Iván Petrella , is an Argentine theologian and political publicist . He is a professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Miami .

Life

Petrella grew up in a Catholic family as the son of the former Argentine Deputy Foreign Minister, Fernando Petrella, but considers herself an agnostic. He studied international relations at Georgetown University and theology at Harvard , where he also received his Ph.D. acquired.

Political and journalistic engagement

Petrella is committed to a programmatic renewal of liberation theology with book publications and through his editorial work . The option for the poor must remain central.

He accuses the classical theology of liberation, as it emerged in Latin America in the 1970s, for an uncritical reception of the dependency theory , as a result of which it fell into a state of political incapacity after the end of the dictatorships of national security . Liberation theology now has to develop a new historical project that is adapted to the changed political circumstances. Petrella sees such a project in Roberto Unger's theory of “alternative pluralisms”.

Petrella publishes the book series Reclaiming Liberation Theology (together with Marcella Althaus-Reid until her death in 2009 ). During the 2008 US presidential campaign , he called for a religious think tank to be set up to support the Democratic candidate. Petrella is also present in political debates in his home country Argentina.
