Hugin [ ˈhʊɡɪn ] is free stitching software that was originally developed by Pablo d'Angelo. It is a GUI for the Panorama Tools (also known as PanoTools ) and other tools.

Thanks to intelligent rectification algorithms , it is not only possible to create linear panorama images from photos placed side by side, but also to create high-resolution photos, whereby the photos can also be positioned one above the other. Hugin can automatically determine the focal lengths of recordings from Exif data of the digital cameras, or you can specify them by hand. You can also create profiles for your own lenses. From version 0.6 there is the possibility of correcting vignetting in the original images, with version 0.7 Hugin can determine the correction parameters for it himself, version 0.8.0 brings many other changes in addition to a new preview window. There is also the option of using different projection methods to display the same output images in completely different ways.

In order to be able to optimize their relative position to each other (and other parameters) before merging individual images, Hugin needs control points that mark identical locations on two or more overlapping individual images. Normally these checkpoints have to be set by the user himself, the programs Autopano-sift or Autopano , for both the mono environment must be installed under Mac OS X and Linux and for Autopano-sift under Windows .NET , such points can also be installed automatically to mark. Since October 2009, autopano-sift-C 2.5.1 on the Hugin website publishes what is not necessary to install Mono or .NET, as it is in pure C written. Autopano-sift and autopano-sift-C use the SIFT algorithm to find control points . Starting with version 2010.4.0, Hugin has its own control point generator, cpfind , which is not based on the patented SIFT algorithm.

When blending the individual images, unsightly, abrupt transitions in brightness can occur, which can be triggered, for example, by different exposure or aperture settings. Double images are also possible if the camera is not swiveled exactly around the center of the entrance pupil between the recordings , so that parallax errors occur, or if there are moving objects in the recordings. In order to avoid or at least reduce these problems, the programs Enblend (now also Version 4.0), Enfuse or Smartblend can be used for crossfading .
