The Hugo Distler Ensemble is a chamber choir that first performed under this name in Lüneburg in 1988. As early as the mid-1980s, he had come together as a group of friends at the St. Nicolai Church in Lüneburg.
Today the Hugo Distler Ensemble consists of around 35 singers. Under its director Erik Matz , it is mainly dedicated to rarely performed choral music of various styles. The encounter with the works of his namesake Hugo Distler was particularly influential for the choir: Hugo Distler's commitment to the musical tradition of the 17th and 18th centuries and the resulting impulses for him for the renewal of sacred (and secular) music of the present also reflect that Within the framework of the ensemble's musical work.
The choir performs mainly a cappella works and has emerged from several choir competitions as a prize winner (Lower Saxony Choir Competitions 1997-2005) and winner (“Cantemus 2004”, Lower Saxony Choir Competition 2009). The ensemble received special prizes for the interpretation of contemporary works in two competitions.
