Erik Matz

Erik Matz (* 1966 in Bassum ) is a German church musician and organist .

Life

Matz initially had several years of private lessons in the subjects of organ and piano. In 1987 he began studying church music at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf . Matz took lessons from Phillip Langshaw (vocals), Thomas Palm (piano), Christoph Schoener (organ), Hartmut Schmidt and Volker Hempfling (choir direction) , among others . Additional subjects were held by Helmuth Rilling , among others .

After graduating with an A musician exam in 1993, Matz began postgraduate studies in conducting and choral conducting, which he completed in 1996 with honors in the practical part of the exam. From 1992 to 1995 Matz was an assistant at the A church musician position in Leverkusen . He often worked with the Leverkusener Bachchor . Since 1995 Matz has been cantor at the St. Marien Church in Uelzen and district cantor for the Protestant Lutheran church. Church district Uelzen. Since September 1998 Matz has been director of the Hugo Distler Ensemble in Lüneburg .

With his internationally known Hugo Distler Ensemble, Matz won numerous prizes, including the Cantemus 2004 choir competition in Limburg and all special prizes in the “Sacred Music” category, including the conductor's prize. His ensemble was also 1st prize winner of the Lower Saxony Choir Competition 2009. Matz won the Conductor's Prize as well as several special prizes for the interpretation of contemporary and romantic works.
