Hugo Junkers Hanger - interior view with an airworthy Ju 52 HB-HOY

The Hugo Junkers hangar at Mönchengladbach Airport has been home to the airworthy Ju 52 HB-HOY since June 2015 . The multifunctional building, in which an exhibition on the life and work of Hugo Junkers can be seen, also serves as an event hall. The name chosen for the structure is likely to be confused with the steel lamellar hall developed by Junkers , a patented hall construction system that was also used for hangars.

Story and idea

With the hangar, the city of Mönchengladbach is honoring one of its most famous sons - the technology and aircraft pioneer Hugo Junkers . The hangar is being realized with the support of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the European Union within the framework of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). In 2010, the Mönchengladbach Economic Development Corporation (WFMG) successfully participated in the Erlebnis.NRW competition as part of the NRW-EU Objective 2 program. Event-Hangar Mönchengladbach GmbH as a subsidiary of the development company of the City of Mönchengladbach (EWMG) is responsible for the project development and construction of the hangar. The project combines an airworthy Ju 52, an event hall and a multimedia exhibition. The official opening of the hangar took place on June 21, 2015 as part of an open day at Mönchengladbach Airport. The first major official event took place there on June 26, 2015, at which 450 invited guests bid farewell to Dieter Porschen, General Manager of IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein .

Architecture and construction

The silhouette of the Hugo Junkers hangar takes up the arch shape of a typical aircraft hangar. The 1,100 m² floor space is used to park the Ju 52 and can also be used as an event area. The foyer as well as the kitchen, sanitary and functional rooms are located in the side wing of the building on the ground floor. There are three seminar rooms on the upper floor. However, the hall is an ordinary steel structure. The system of steel lamellar halls developed by Junkers was not used, and one of the still preserved but endangered halls was relocated or at least the construction system was used in a new form.

The CASA 352 L (Ju 52) HB-HOY belongs to the Association of Friends of Historic Aircraft. V. and dates from 1949. The aircraft offers space for 17 passengers, two pilots and a flight attendant. The top speed is 290 km / h.

"Oldtimer Fly- & Drive in"

Every last Sunday of the month between May and September the event "Oldtimer Fly- & Drive in" takes place in and around the hangar . This is a meeting of historical aircraft and vehicles (H license plates), from bicycles to cars and trucks to tractors. It is also possible to fly in some historical aircraft. Participation and visit are free.
