Hulda (first name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hulda is a female given name.

Origin and meaning

The name can either be of biblical origin or come from the Nordic world of legends. In the first case, the name is derived from the prophetess Hulda , who is mentioned in the 2nd Book of Kings and in the 2nd Book of the Chronicles of the Old Testament . The meaning is explained with the feminine form of the Hebrew חלֶד (cholæd), which means mole or weasel. In the second case the name comes from the Nordic hulda , which means something like to hide , to keep secret . It was the name of a sorceress or a witch . A derivation from the modern Swedish gracious , which means nice , lovable , is also possible.
