A dog toy is an aid that encourages domestic dogs to play. As a rule, it is an object that can be moved by the dog according to size, weight, type, shape and texture or carried in the snout and retrieved .

Play meets the dog's need for movement, strengthens the bond with the owner and can be used to train the dog ("obedience"). Dog toys can encourage play. Traditionally, household items are often used as dog toys, such as an old, knotted towel or a short piece of sufficiently thick rope with a knot end or an old shoe. In addition, there are now a large number of specially manufactured dog toys, such as the dog ball thrower or the dog ball throwing machine , which are offered by retailers.
