The Hydrocorynidae are a family of hydrozoa (Hydrozoa) from the tribe of the cnidarians (Cnidaria) that live exclusively in the sea . It is a small family of five species in two genera .
features
The hydroid polyps form colonies with a chitinized, stolonal hydrorhiza plate. The hydrant are columnar, mostly relatively large with a thickened mesogloeal lamella, which has a longitudinal back. The tentacles are hollow and capitat, with a wreath of tentacles or five to six wreaths of tentacles standing closely together over the conical hypostome . The gonophores sit in groups at the base of the hydrant or develop from the hydrorhiza; they are free medusas or eumedusoids.
The medusa has an even, strongly curved umbrella with four edge tentacles. These are irregularly covered with nettle cell tubercles and show a slight thickening at the end of the tentacle. A gastric stalk may or may not be present. The tentacle buds are covered with ocelli . The manubrium is bottle-shaped or tubular, square or cross-shaped. The basal part of the manubrium is cross-shaped and may be occupied with groups of stinging cells. The gonads start interradially and encompass almost the entire manubrium.
Geographical distribution and occurrence
The previously known species of Hydrocorynidae originate from the coastal areas of the East and West Pacific. The polyps live there in the deeper intertidal to shallow subtidal .
Systematics
The "World Hydrozoa Datadase" currently lists only five species, which are divided into two genera.
