Hymenaeus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hymenaeus was a false teacher named in Paul's two letters to Timothy .

Mention in the Bible

In the first Timeotheus  1, 20  LUT is mentioned that Hymenaeus and a certain Alexander excluded from the community were.

In 2. Timeotheus  2  LUT Hymenäus is mentioned again. Here he is mentioned, along with a certain Philetus, as a false teacher :

"Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have strayed from the truth and say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they lead some away from the faith."

- 2 Timothy 2 17b – 18  LUT

The doctrine spread by the two that the resurrection has already taken place indicates that they were followers of Gnosis . Behind this was probably the Gnostic view that through the act of knowledge the divine spiritual spark caught in man is freed and enters heaven.
