Hymn to Freedom (Ivan Gundulić)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The hymn to freedom (Croatian Himna slobodi ) is a poem written in Croatian vernacular . This was written in 1628 by the Dubrovnik (Ragusa) poet Ivan Gundulić . The musical version comes from Jakov Gotovac , a composer from Split who wrote this piece in 1926.

The basic message of this poem is that freedom is an unsurpassable good. This is also a symbolic expression of the longing for freedom, for which the population of the city of Dubrovnik had to pay taxes for centuries.

The poem comes from Gundulić's Pastorale Dubravka and consists of six verses and 42 words. The play is performed annually at the opening of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival (Croat. Dubrovačke ljetne igre ).
