The division of living beings into systematics is a continuous subject of research. Different systematic classifications exist side by side and one after the other. The taxon treated here has become obsolete due to new research or is not part of the group systematics presented in the German-language Wikipedia.

The Hypnosqualea are a group of cartilaginous fish (Chondrichthyes), which includes the angel sharks (Squantiniformes), the sawshark-like (Pristiophoriformes) and the four orders of rays (Batoidei). The "Hypnosqualea Hypothesis" was set up in 1996 by Shirai.

The extinct shark Protospinax , which looks like an early angel shark , is considered to be the sister taxon .
