International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Manual

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue (IAMSAR) Manual is a guide to the search and rescue procedure .

It is published jointly by two UN specialized agencies , the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The IAMSAR manual contains guidelines for the search and rescue procedure, both for aviation and for shipping. The implementation of a joint manual is intended to ensure smooth cooperation between the two areas. This is necessary because in many ship accidents and many aircraft accidents both ships and aircraft are involved in search and rescue operations.

The IAMSAR manual consists of three volumes, which are published as a loose-leaf collection. The first volume, "Organization and Management", deals with global, national and regional SAR concepts and cooperation between countries with the aim of creating effective and economical SAR systems. It is primarily aimed at the responsible government agencies.

The second volume, "Mission Co-ordination", provides support in the planning and implementation of SAR missions and exercises. The target group are civil protection organizations and the national MRCC .

Volume three, “Mobile Facilities”, must be carried on board by all vehicles that can take on search or rescue tasks. This includes all merchant ships, as these must be able to carry out SAR operations in an emergency and coordinate them as on-scene commander . Volume three describes in detail communication, organization and search procedures on site.
