The IAR-15 is a Romanian fighter aircraft of the 1930s.
development
The IAR-15 was developed by Elie Carafoli and was created shortly after the IAR-14 . It differed only insignificantly from this in terms of structure and dimensions, but received a stronger engine and streamlined landing gear fairings. The prototype took off on its maiden flight in 1933 with a 500 hp Gnome-Rhône engine . Although a more powerful drive from the same manufacturer was planned for the production version, only five copies of the IAR-15 were built. As with its predecessor IAR-14, the decision to series production was made in favor of the Polish license model P.11 .
construction
The IAR-15 is a cantilever low-wing aircraft in composite construction . The fuselage consists of three parts with an oval cross-section. The middle section, together with the wing middle section, forms a unit of duralumin framework, ribs and planking. The front and back are made of tubular steel framework and are planked with sheet metal or covered with fabric. The three-part wing is designed with two duralumin box spars, the two outer parts have ribs made from Romanian spruce with plywood paneling. All oars and fins are made from a duralumin frame with a fabric covering. The main landing gear wheels are clad in a streamlined manner and can be braked. Like the tail wheel, they cannot be retracted.
